Nissan earns EPA’s highest honor in ENERGY STAR® program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan remains a leader in energy performance with recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a 2021 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence awardee. The coveted award is the highest honor given by the EPA to organizations that demonstrate superior leadership, innovation and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency.

This is Nissan's 12th Partner of the Year recognition and 10th consecutive year achieving the Sustained Excellence Award for its environmental stewardship in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy management within its U.S. facilities.

"Receiving the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award affirms our commitment to care for our communities by continuing to integrate practices that reduce our environmental impact," said Chris Goddard, manager, Energy and Environmental Engineering, Nissan U.S. "Sustainability requires proactive, sustained effort and Nissan understands its unique position to contribute to the fight for the future of our planet. It is an effort that we take seriously and we are ready to put in the work."

In 2020, Nissan achieved an absolute energy reduction of 21% across its U.S. manufacturing footprint. Since becoming an ENERGY STAR partner in 2006, Nissan has saved nearly 8 trillion BTUs of the energy required to manufacture and assemble vehicles. This savings is equivalent to the amount of energy needed to drive a Nissan LEAF more than 8.3 billion miles or more than 44 round trips from the Earth to the sun.

Additional efforts to reduce energy usage include switching to more efficient technologies like LED lighting, engaging all employees in energy management, and including energy efficiency in design, such as environmentally friendly paint processes.

With a strong commitment to bettering communities where it does business, Nissan has used its expertise to help Middle Tennessee and Central Mississippi schools with their energy-saving initiatives, with many earning ENERGY STAR certification.

Carbon neutrality goal

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence recognition underpins Nissan's goal to achieve carbon neutrality across the company's global operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050¹, building on its decades-long programs to reduce emissions and provide electric vehicle technologies that benefit the environment and society.

Nissan's ambition also expands upon past initiatives under the Nissan Green Program and the company's ongoing work to minimize the carbon footprint of its products and operations.
