The Renault-Nissan Alliance signs agreement with Government of Puerto Rico for introduction of Zero-Emissions Nissan LEAF

  • Will foster the availability of zero-emissions Nissan LEAF in Puerto Rico.
  • This initiative will review alternatives to promote a Green Puerto Rico.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Puerto-Rican Government for the introduction and fostering of the zero-emissions Nissan LEAF electric vehicle.

Today, with the backdrop of the solar panels at the Town hall of Bayamón and celebrating Earth Month, the government of Puerto Rico and Nissan signed an MOU to study ways to foster the introduction, use and expansion of electric vehicles in Puerto Rico. In attendance were the Governor of Puerto Rico, Luis G. Fortuño, accompanied by the Executive Director of the Puerto-Rican Electric Power Authority, Miguel A. Cordero Lopez, as well as Ken Ramirez, Director of Nissan Latin America and the Caribbean.

Pursuant to the objectives of this agreement, a working group will be established, integrated by Puertorican Government officials and Nissan representatives, whose goals are to implement a pilot program for the use of the Nissan LEAF and define the incentives granted by regulatory institutions and the Government to users of this new technology.

“Today, we take one more step toward the Green Puerto Rico initiative by signing the agreement aimed at evaluating several ways to foster the use of electric vehicles in Puerto Rico. This agreement allow us to create a working plan to implement a pilot program, which may include the creation of a battery recharge network as well as possible incentives for using it”, declared the Governor, Luis G. Fortuño.

“It is an honor for Nissan today to be a part of this initiative of the Government of Puerto Rico. The MOU that we have signed today with the Government is a decisive step to introduce our zero-emissions technology with Nissan LEAF”, said Ken Ramirez, Director of Nissan Latin America and the Caribbean (NLAC). “We are ready to work jointly and make the age of sustainable mobility in Puerto Rico a reality.”

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has established more than 90 partnerships around the world with governments, municipalities, power suppliers and new carriers interested in developing the infrastructure for electric cars.

“We appreciate the commitment of Nissan toward the environment and the reduction of pollutants and emissions in Puerto Rico. We are certain that this agreement will open the path for a green future, a safe and clean Puerto Rico”, concluded the Governor.
